Can I Use Matte Products On Glossy Paint?

Last Updated April 29, 2022

People routinely ask us whether you can use Dr. Beasley’s matte paint care products on glossy paint. Which isn’t surprising; most would assume that if glossy products make matte shine, then matte products would make gloss dull. But that’s actually far from the truth—our matte products don’t make shiny paintwork any less shiny. That’s right: You can safely use Dr. Beasley’s matte paint care products on glossy paint. It’s all because our matte paint products aren’t designed to change a finish’s luster; instead, they’re designed to preserve the original look.

If you’re not yet convinced, we’ve broken down just what makes each Dr. Beasley’s matte paint care product safe for glossy paint below.

Matte Body Wash

What makes Matte Body Wash specially formulated for matte paint is its lack of silicones, wax, and other fillers. These ingredients, seen in many conventional car wash soaps, are included specifically to produce a level of gloss, which, as you can surmise, is the last thing you’d want to do to matte paint. So knowing that, is there any downside to using a soap that doesn’t shine on glossy paint? Not really! You can always add gloss down the line by applying Formula 1201 or PlasmaCoat. Just make sure to tape off those matte sections first!

Matte Paint Cleanser

Matte Paint Cleanser actively breaks down contamination on its own; that way, you don’t need to rub the surface excessively to remove gunk. Which is important, since heavy abrasion can sometimes produce an unsightly shine on a matte finish. Matte Paint Cleanser’s other major benefit is that doesn’t streak or haze in any way. Since anti-streaking and self-cleaning are also great for glossy paint, you’re totally fine to use Matte Paint Cleanser on a shiny finish.

Matte Final Finish

Much like Matte Body Wash, the only major difference between Matte Final Finish and conventional detailing sprays is its lack of glossing agents. So really, there’s no issue using it on a glossy finish unless you really want to get a nice sparkle after you touch-up a lightly soiled area.

Matte Paint Coating

The science behind Matte Paint Coating’s nanotechnology goes something like this: A matte finish, at the microscopic level, is incredibly bumpy and jagged. This is what creates the paint’s flattened appearance—light is scattered when reflected instead of redirected at roughly parallel angles. Unlike conventional ceramic coatings that coat over those hills and valleys, Matte Paint Coating adheres to them so light can continue to scatter. So what does that mean for glossy paint?

In a nutshell, it means the coating won’t produce the hyper-glossy effect other ceramic coatings are known for. Which honestly isn’t a big deal; as striking as a ceramic coating’s gloss is, most of that shine comes from the paintwork prep before hand. And if you really need that extra boost in shine, you can always wax the surface as needed!

Matte Wheel Seal

At the risk of sounding redundant, the only thing that makes Matte Wheel Seal matte-specific is its ability to adhere to the hills and valleys in matte finishes instead of filling them in, thereby preserving the existing finish. So if for whatever reason you’ve got a bottle of Matte Wheel Seal and a set of glossy-finished wheels, there’s no real harm in protecting them with said product.
