Should I Polish My Car?

Polish when the paint has correctable defects—such as swirl marks or light scratches—that washing and chemical decontamination cannot fix, not merely when you want to “make it shiny.”

⚠️ Only Polish When Necessary!

Factory automotive clear coat is thin. Polishing removes a small amount of clear coat material to level scratches and smooth the finish to produce gloss. Too much or too aggressive polishing can reduce UV protection and increase the chance of clear coat failure.

Identify Defects to Determine Polishing Needs

Swirls in automotive paint

Swirls

  • Tiny circular-looking scratches
  • Typically visible in sunlight
  • Caused by wiping with dirty, rough or dry towels/mitts
  • Physical defects in the clear coat

✅ Polishing Recommended

Oxidation

  • Dull, chalky fading in paint
  • Often related to UV and environmental exposure
  • Mild surface oxidation may respond to polishing; cloudiness, peeling or cracking may indicate clear-coat failure

⚠️ Inspect Before Polishing

Water spots

Water Spots

  • Chalky, white rings
  • Mineral residue left behind after hard water droplets evaporate
  • Some spots can be removed chemically
  • Others physically etch into clear coat

🛑 Try Chemical Removal First

Deep Scratches or Scuffs

  • Penetrate clear coat deeply
  • Removal may level clear coat beyond safe levels of thickness
  • Some scratches may even go past clear coat
