Last week we at Dr. Beasley’s held our first-ever “Advanced Paint Correction Clinic” as part of our “Future of Detailing” clinic series in partnership with Lake Country Manufacturing, Griot’s Garage and FLEX Tools. The event was a huge success, with professional detailers from all over the country (some even coming for their second or third time) making the trek to Lake Country Manufacturing HQ in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin.
The APC Clinic focuses more on sophisticated automotive paint reconditioning techniques as opposed to the more general detailing topics covered in our “Primer” clinics. Over the course of two days students worked together to correct the paintwork on a total of seven vehicles:
- 1995 Mercedes-Benz C36
- 2019 BMW 740i
- 1973 Pontiac Grand Ville Convertible (rare car — less then 5,000 made!)
- 2005 Chevrolet SSR
- 2016 Dodge Challenger Hellcat
- 2001 Porsche 911 Carrera
- 2013 Volkswagen Golf
Each car was approached systematically to teach the proper methodology for evaluating and correcting automotive paint. The class followed these steps to “dial-in” their process and maintain operational efficiency while working:
- Thoroughly inspect the paint. In this stage, students and instructors inspect every inch of paint for defects.
- Catalog flaws and imperfections. After inspection, all defects are cataloged for easy reference during the correction stage.
- Test different pad and product combinations. At this point the instructor leads students in conducting a “test spot” to determine the softness of the vehicle paint and how severe the defects are. A small portion of paint on the hood is taped off and corrected with increasingly aggressive pads and products until the desired results are achieved. Students then use this process for the rest of the vehicle.
- Assign panels. To ensure students are working together efficiently, panels are assigned by writing students’ names on a specially designed diagram that shows all of the vehicle’s body panels.
- Start working! Once everyone knows how they’re correcting and what they’re correcting, it’s time to let the students loose on the vehicle in question. While working instructors keep a close eye on the students’ technique so any problems can be addressed quickly.

Once the vehicles were completed a graduation ceremony followed, with each student receiving a Certificate of Accreditation for the paint correction proficiency they demonstrated during the clinic. Instructors also received a Certificate of Appreciation to honor the hard work and talent they contributed to the clinic.
