Car Detailed at Dr. Beasley’s Class Auctions for $130K+

Last Updated March 10, 2022

Last week a 1960 Mercedes-Benz 190SL detailed by a Dr. Beasley’s class sold for $134,000 on auction site “Bring a Trailer”. We can’t say we’re surprised — the “Future of Detailing” class back in June put everything into this car.

First the class protected the vehicle’s finish with Nano-Resin Pro, a 25-year self-healing ceramic coating. Then the class totally reconditioned the interior with Fine Leather Cleanser and Leather Cream before protecting the work with Leather Lock Pro. Considering the work the class put into this vintage vehicle, we have no doubt their skill had a lot to do with the final 6-figure bid.

Congrats to everyone who worked on this car!

From the original “Bring a Trailer” listing:

“This 1960 Mercedes-Benz 190SL was acquired by the seller out of Texas in 2006, and a subsequent refurbishment was performed by K&K Manufacturing of Sparta, Michigan. Work involved refinishing the body in black, re-plating the brightwork, and installation of replacement tan leather upholstery. Power comes from a 1.9-liter M121 inline-four mated to a four-speed manual transmission, and additional equipment includes dual Weber carburetors, 14″ aluminum wheels, a black soft top, a Nardi steering wheel, and Coco mats. This 190SL is offered with manufacturer’s books, reference literature, service records and parts invoices, refurbishment photos, spare parts, and a clean Illinois title in the seller’s name.

The body was refinished in its factory color of black in 2007, and the seller notes that rust remediation and corrective metal workwas conducted at that time. Exterior details include a matching black convertible soft top as well as an aluminum hood, deck lid, and doors. Additional equipment consists of chrome bumper overriders, E-Code headlights equipped with relays, a single side mirror, and chrome stone guards fitted ahead of the rear wheel arches. A set of chrome fender trim is included in the sale.

Replacement 14″ aluminum wheels wear hubcaps with body-color accents and are mounted with Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. A set of steel wheels and trim rings accompany the sale and are pictured in the gallery below. Factory equipment includes double-wishbone front suspension, rear swing axles with coil springs, and power-assisted drum brakes. The seller states that a thicker sway bar has been installed.

The cabin features seats covered in tan leather upholstery accompanied by matching door panels, carpeting, and dashboard trim. Amenities include a dash-mounted rear-view mirror, a VDO clock in the glove box door, heating and ventilation controls, a radio block-off plate, and Coco mats.

The wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel frames VDO instrumentation consisting of a 140-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and gauges for fuel level, water temperature, and oil-pressure. Approximately 10k miles are shown on the five-digit odometer, which has rolled over according to the seller. Total mileage is unknown. A factory steering wheel is included in the sale.

The 1.9-liter M121 inline-four features a single overhead camshaft and was rated at 105 horsepower when new. Dual Weber 45 DCOE carburetors are fitted in place of the factory Solex units, and further additions include a PMGR starter and an alternator. The timing chain and head gasket were replaced in 2009, and a new battery was fitted in June 2021. The removed carburetors are included in the sale.”
