He considered increasing abrasive size, but bigger abrasives mean swirl marks that need to be polished out and a greater risk of paint burning.
So instead of going bigger, Jim focused on the engineering of the abrasive particle itself. When most polish and compound manufacturers need a more aggressive abrasive, they go bigger. But bigger means more surface heat and horrible swirls.
