New Maserati EV to Feature Matte Paint Finish

Maserati recently announced a new electric version of their Grecale SUV dubbed the “Grecale Folgore”. The big twist? It sports a factory matte finish.

This isn’t Maserati’s first foray into matte finishes — they’ve offered them on GT models in the past — but it’s definitely their biggest jump into the non-reflective paint world thus far. Set to be released for the 2024 model year, the Grecale Folgore should be arriving sometime in 2023. We’re excited to see another OEM matte finish out there and we hope Maserati is proactive in advising its customers on how best to care for this unique type of finish.

How Do I Care for a Matte Finish?

Matte finishes require a special kind of care. As opposed to glossy finishes, which are relatively smooth, matte finishes are micro-textured to produce their signature diffused look. The texture causes light to scatter, which prevents a distinct image from reflecting back into your eyes. Glossy finishes, on the other hand, are smooth enough to reflect light at a consistent angle, which produces a relatively clear image reminiscent of a mirror.

Because 99% of cars on the road have glossy paint finishes, most car care products are designed to produce the smoothest surface possible to enhance the existing gloss. That’s not something you want to do with a matte finish — it fills in the diffusing texture, producing a sickly, unpleasant semi-gloss. This means you need products that don’t fill in the texture and protect the matte appearance, like Dr. Beasley’s matte finish care line.
