Journey Into the World of Matte
One of our very first blog posts, many years ago, was about matte vehicles. We were surprised that so many people commented on it, and at the amount of questions about matte car care that came through. With so much uncertainty out there, we realized that products for matte finishes weren’t yet available to the public. There was a big information void and no solutions. We wanted to figure out the proper way to care for matte finishes because we wanted to help our readers. So we rolled up our sleeves and got to work. To start, we had several automotive body panels painted matte: semi-gloss, satin and flat in both single stage and clear coat. We performed hours and hours of testing, both in the laboratory and in the field. Within 6 months, we became the first car care company to offer a complete matte paint care system, formulated from scratch to provide an innovative and very user-friendly solution. Today at Dr. Beasley’s, we are known for our expertise in matte care, and we continually provide new products for matte substrates. We are contacted daily by enthusiasts, as well as industry leaders, with questions about the proper care of these finishes, which still make lots of people pretty nervous. Matte paint is a high growth sector in the automotive industry, yet there still seems to be a lot of anxiety surrounding proper matte car care. It was our customers who helped us solidify our passion for matte paint care. We received a call from a professional detailer who worked at a BMW dealership. It was his first encounter with a Frozen BMW. He had already purchased our Matte Paint Prescription kit, read our matte care pamphlet, and went online to watch our instructional videos. Even though he’d done his homework, he was still afraid of flat paint because of the horror stories he’d heard from industry buddies. He said that all eyes were on him, including those of his general manager, so I stayed on the telephone and walked him through each step. As he was wiping our Matte Paint Coating from the car, I could hear his relief, and laughter, as he let me know the BMW looked amazing.
Big News, Big Names
Late last fall, Audi reached out to us to discuss using Dr. Beasley’s matte products on the new 2017 S8 plus. Their team expressed their apprehension about caring for matte paint, so I offered to fly to their headquarters in Washington, DC to personally demonstrate our products.
The S8 Plus
They really put me to the test. The S8 plus was sitting in the wash bay and it was absolutely filthy. It had been road tested and actually looked like a little off-roading might have happened. Even with all the caked on dirt and grime, I wasn’t worried. I poured the prescribed amount of Matte Body Wash in the bucket using the ½ ounce cap as a measuring device. The soap was so foamy that the team commented that they thought I had over-poured, but I showed them that it was correct amount. Not surprisingly, I didn’t receive any offers to help me wash the car – nobody wanted to take responsibility in case the paint became damaged. When I was about three quarters of the way done and they saw that the car was in great shape, they started to join in and wash the balance of the panels. After using two fresh mitts to remove all the dirt, I could see that the paint was back to its flawless flat look. I started to apply our Matte Paint Coating, which is easily the most important step in matte paint care. I worked across the car, with all eyes on me as I moved from panel to panel, and the vehicle started to have that beautiful matte glow. Everyone joined in and helped when they saw how perfect the finish looked.
We wrapped up and took the car outside to the expose the finish to daylight. Even though it wasn’t a bright day, the S8 plus just glowed. We drove back to headquarters and I was welcomed inside to discuss the two most important considerations of matte paint care: using products specifically designed for matte finishes and protecting the finish from environmental damage. Dr. Beasley’s products offer a complete solution, and our products will keep a finish looking new for years and years.

I left Audi headquarters knowing that we provided the best care for the vehicle and educated their team in the latest procedures and products.
