50+ Photos from Mike Phillips’ Matte Detailing Class (November 2024)

Last Updated December 4, 2024

The goal for this class was to learn how to install a matte ceramic coating to matte paint to make money detailing cars or simply know how to detail your own matte finished car. We had 4 stellar people attend this class and 2 super cool matte finished SUVs for hands-on training.

Here’s Shawn, an alumni student from our glossy paint detailing classes applying the Dr. Beasley’s Matte Paint Coating Pro to the hood of the Genisis.

Matte Paint Coating Pro Kit
For this first training SUV we’re using the Dr. Beasley’s Matte Paint Coating Pro Kit. This is a 5-year self-healing professional-style ceramic coating for matte finishes.

Next up, the class will cover wet-on-wet application of a ceramic matte coating.

Wet-on-Wet Ceramic Matte Coating Application
As an option, after a very thorough washing and rinsing process, AFTER THE FINAL RINSE – while there is still standing clean water on the vehicle, you can install the Dr. Beasley’s matte ceramic coatings. Of course in a perfect world you would do this inside, for example if you have an indoor wash bay, but it can be done outside like you see here.

Work in the shade
It’s vitally important to always wash and coat matte paint in the shade, out of direct sunlight. We’re lucky in that the front of our shop has full shade until around noon so we have plenty of time to tackle this project.

Matte Paint Coating Extreme Prep Wash
This is a multiple-step process for washing a matte finished car to remove any contamination off the matte paint and to ensure the matte paint is surgically clean and ready for the coating installation.

Process

  1. Foam and allow Dr. Beasley’s Matte Paint Body Wash to dwell – but don’t let the suds dry on the paint.
  2. Rinse to remove any loosened dirt and grime.
  3. Re-foam a second time then do a full but careful contact wash with clean, inspected wash mitts.
  4. Thorough rinse.
  5. Dry paint.
  6. Apply Matte Paint Decon to one panel at a time – allow to dwell for 2-3 minutes without drying on the paint and then wipe dry with a clean microfiber towel.
  7. Final full contact wash.
  8. Final thorough rinse.

Here’s Shawn rinsing off the foam after allowing it to dwell first.

EGO 3200 PSI Pressure Washer
A shout-out and thank you to Chris Metcalf at FLEX and EGO for supporting our educational and hands-on car and boat detailing classes. Chris knows that at our classes, the students get LOTS of hands-on time with FLEX and EGO tools.

Matte Decon
After foaming, rinsing, foaming, washing, rinsing and then drying, it’s time to apply the Dr. Beasley’s Matte Decon to remove any road grime or other surface contamination.

After spraying the Matte Decon onto a section of the roof, next Jon spread the product evenly over the paint using a small, clean microfiber towel pre-saturated with the Matte Decon and then after allowing the product to dwell for 2-3 minutes, but never drying on the surface, he wipes the excess off with a separate clean, microfiber towel.

Matte Paint Coating
After the team treated each body panel with the Matte Decon and the re-washed and thoroughly rinsed the Hyundia Santa Fe, with the clean standing water still on the vehicle, it’s time to install the Dr. Beasley’s Matte Paint Coating.

Certificate Award Ceremony
After both SUVs were completed, it’s time for the certificate award ceremony. Some people love getting a certificate from the detailing classes and besides the beautifully designed and detailed certificate, the students can also share this write-up, which documents their taking of the class plus they snag any pictures they want to share on their own social media platforms.

Congratulations Angel Moreno!

Class Questions Recap
I always give due credit where credit is due. I never share things I’ve learned from others without sharing where I obtained the information. Here’s a technique I learned from Jason Rose probably over a decade ago. The technique or practice is to start the class by asking each person, what are the key things or key take-aways they want to get from the class. Genius.

Matte Class Questions Whiteboard
Here’s an old school dry erase board that I have on the wall in our training garage. Forgive my poor writing style, this is why I’m a typist.

Before the class started, I wrote each person’s name on the white board and then asked each person, what are the most important things you want to learn in this class. Then at the end of the class we go through the list and ask each person if we successfully answered all their questions. The goal is to achieve 100% and I’m happy to say, we reached the goal.

Pizza Lunch Reward
We had a cold spell moving though Stuart, Florida and temperatures dropped down to 50 degrees. For this reason, we started inside with the Genisis GV70, which I washed the day before to allow some time to go by so it would warm-up a little. In other words, these guys earned their lunch!

On a personal note…

I appreciate all four of these men for traveling to Stuart, Florida to take this class. I especially would like to thank Jon West, who drove here all the way from Colorado to take this class!

I also appreciate that everyone was careful to never rub too hard when working through the various products and processes so as NOT to create a shiny spot. Thank you!

Class Schedule for 2025
This was the last class of 2024 for our Stuart location. If you find you’re the type of person that learns better by doing versus sitting in a chair, then clear your schedule, make your travel plans and get signed-up for a future class.
